When should you rekey instead of replacing locks?

Rekeying changes which keys operate the lock. Replacement changes the hardware itself. The right choice depends on the condition of the lock, the reason access needs to change, and whether the door still closes cleanly.

Rekeying is often the cleanest option after moving into a property, losing track of old keys, changing tenants, or updating staff access. The lock body stays in place, but the internal pins or cylinder setup are changed so previous keys no longer operate it.

If the key sticks, the handle is loose, the cylinder turns poorly, or the door hardware has visible wear, replacing the lock may be the more sensible repair. New hardware can also improve security, finish, and daily usability.

A lock problem is sometimes caused by door movement, hinge sag, or strike plate alignment. If the door is not closing squarely, a new lock may still feel rough unless the alignment is corrected at the same time.
