Signs your lock needs repair

Small lock problems are easier to fix before they become lockouts. Watch for rough movement, loose parts, inconsistent keys, and doors that no longer close as cleanly as they used to.

A key should enter and turn with predictable pressure. Grinding, catching, or needing to pull the key slightly back before turning can point to cylinder wear or key damage.

Movement around the cylinder, handle, or face plate can strain the mechanism. Sometimes it only needs adjustment, but loose hardware can also point to deeper wear.

If the lock only works when the door is lifted, pushed, or pulled, alignment should be checked. The lock may not be the only part that needs attention.
